Procrastinator Vs. Pre-crastinator, why we do it and how we can overcome it.

What makes us procrastinate and why are we happy to do it despite the consequences? What can we do to help ourselves?

Are you a Procrastinator or Pre-Crastinator?

Check out here why I do what I do.

After running my Declutter your home, declutter your mind' event over the last few months, the most common excuse for joining the event was the art of procrastination and how it was the easiest way out of doing things, along with the saying 'I'll do it later' or 'I'll do it tomorrow' and yet happy to use that time watching T.V. or resting.

Is that a good thing or bad thing? Well yes and no, yes, because your body maybe telling you to take it easy as you've had a hard day and no, as it's more likely your subconscious is telling you to leave it for another day and now you're wasting time probably sitting on social media, or doing other random things that don't really show any structural outcome.

Unfortunately most of us tend to think time is timeless, you have plenty of time to get the job done until it's the day before the deadline and adrenaline kicks in and now you're against time, cursng yourselves, asking why you didn't just do it in the first place! This is unhealthy, as you're also being self critical, getting stressed and harming your own mental health by being hard on yourself too.

As a pre-crastinator, getting things done really early or going hell for leather can also mess up your energy levels and mental health. Check out below which one you are and try to find a balance. As much as you need harmony in your life, you also need this within yourself.

Signs you're a Procrastinator.

There are several reasons why you might procrastinate, such as not knowing what needs to be done, not knowing how to do something, not wanting to do something, not caring if it gets done or not, not feeling in the mood to do it, being in the habit of waiting until the last minute, believing that you work better under pressure, thinking that you can finish it at the last minute, lacking the initiative to get started, forgetting, blaming sickness or poor health, waiting for the right moment, needing time to think about the task, or delaying one task in favour of working on another. Delve deeper, it can be a sign of OCD (Obsessive compulsive disorder) or depression.

What can you do about it?

Grab a notepad and pen, write down all the things you need to do and put them in order of importance, add a date by each one so it's easier to accomplish, also break them down to smaller tasks if you can so you're not overwhelmed. You can also remove all distractions, such as mobiles, get off social media and remove anything else you find a distraction. If you feel you're going into procrastination mode, retract and take a look at any of the tasks you need to do instead. Most of all, celebrate all of your accomplishments, it's something many forget to do. Whether it's a big or small accomplishment, pat yourself on the back!

Signs of a Pre-crastinator.

Yes, such a thing exists, unfortunately procrastination is most talked about than pre-crastination. With pre-crastination, you want to get everything done before the alloted time, and where you're meant to be resting, you feel you should just crack on with the tasks in hand no matter the consequences. Pre-crastination can put your health at risk mentally, just as procrastinating can but also physically. Doing things quicker than needed, along with anything else you do, such as your day job can lead you to 'burn out' so listen to you body.

If you tend to grab the first parking space available to you, arrive really early for a meeting or date, pay bills really early or/and pack weeks or days before your holiday you're a pre-crastinator. It doesn't stop there, if you feel you can't relax until all of your tasks are done, you sit in this category. checking the weather 10 days before your trip and you're constantly checking, changing lanes early while your're driving, getting your purse or wallet out prior to joining the queue in your local supermarket and also taking your house keys out half an hour before getting home. There are so many more examples of a pre-crastinator but you get the idea.

What can you do to prevent pre-crastinating?

Start living in the present rather than thinking about what is coming up in the future, this will help you focus on what actually needs to be done in this moment. Instead of taking the first opportunity given, wait, as there may be something better, or even still, when you prep for a meeting, instead of prepping too far ahead, pace yourself as you'll find you may need to go back to it anyway to add more info.

Also, try to organise your time so you are on time rather than being some place too early (unless you have to set up for something). This way you're not wasting time and especially if the other person is late. Also this will save you some energy so you can use it for the jobs later on in the day rather than feeling washed out!

If there are tasks you are unable to do due to the overwhelm or you have so much to do and even getting ahead is getting you down, there is help out there. All you need to do is ask.

Universal Love and Harmony.
